Nepal faces a complex web of security challenges that span traditional geopolitics and non-traditional threats. Primary vulnerabilities include an open border with India, facilitating transnational crimes, political instability and civil unrest, rapid economic disparity, rising cyber threats, and vulnerabilities stemming from the India-China geopolitical rivalry. 

Geopolitical and External Challenges

• India-China Rivalry: Sandwiched between two emerging nuclear-armed superpowers, Nepal continuously navigates diplomatic tightropes, attempting to maintain an independent foreign policy without getting caught in the regional crossfire. 
• Open-Border Vulnerabilities: The largely unrestricted porous border with India complicates border policing, leaving the country susceptible to narcotics smuggling, human trafficking, and illicit cross-border movement. 

Internal and Human Security

• Political Instability: Frequent government shifts, transitional governance, and societal polarization often lead to sporadic civil unrest, protests, and localized civil disturbances. 
• Economic Disparity: High unemployment rates, over-reliance on remittances, and a widening wealth gap threaten human security and can serve as drivers for internal conflict and youth out-migration. 
• Refugee and Migration Crises: The influx of individuals from conflict zones, including Rohingya refugees and Tibetan populations, adds logistical and immigration security complexities. 

Modern and Emerging Threats

• Cybersecurity Risks: As Nepal rapidly digitizes its financial and public services, weak security practices and low public awareness have led to a sharp rise in cybercrimes, including phishing, ransomware, and data breaches. 
• Information and Digital Censorship: Balancing national security with democratic rights has become highly contentious, as seen in controversial government attempts to restrict or regulate social media platforms under the guise of "maintaining social harmony". 
• Religious and Ethnic Tensions: Individuals and fringe groups sometimes attempt to disrupt traditional religious and ethnic harmony, occasionally resulting in localized clashes.
