Women, law and justice

Women's status, as measured by women's marginal opportunities, restricted capabilities and limited entitlements in all spheres of existence--social, economic and political--demonstrates the inequitable gender based realities of men and women in Nepali society. This is evident in women's poor health status as demonstrated by the differential life expectancy for women compared to men; high maternal mortality rate as well as the large incidence of malnutrition and anemia among girls and women.

Another indicator of women's deprivation is women's illiteracy and limited access to education services. In general, women face severe constraints in the accesses to resources-which are inclusive of tangible material resources such as property, credit, education, and employment; as well as intangible social resources such as information, community networks, political access and clout. Despite women's significant contributions- at the household and national levels- the inevitability of women's work, women's limited representation and participation in private and public decision making structures and processes emphasize the discriminatory norms and values underlying the differential outcomes foe women and men.
